John Forward
John’s work is exhibited regularly at the St Ives Society of Artists, Cornwall. He lives and works in Ashwater in West Devon, and draws inspiration from the rolling landscape around his smallholding on a tributary of the River Tamar, and the stretch of rugged coastline from Crackington Haven to Hartland Point.
John paints only in watercolour and a recent review of one of his pictures in the American magazine ‘The Artist’ described his work as being ‘consistent with the finest traditions of watercolour in England’
‘After 12 years of almost full time painting I’ve found that the best way to paint is to let the watercolour paint itself’, says John, ‘careful planning and the courage to ‘go with the flow’ when something unexpected happens, brings the artwork alive’.
John was born near Pontypool, South Wales in 1955 and moved to Ashwater shortly after marrying his ‘Cornish Maid’ in 1989. She doesn’t mind living in Devon as their place is very close to the border!
